​The Jesus Prayer

The Jesus Prayer is one of the best-known prayers of Orthodox Christian spirituality.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner.

The prayer is simple, but its purpose is profound: to turn our hearts and minds towards Christ with humility, repentance and faith.

Praying the Jesus Prayer

At Saint Anne’s, the Jesus Prayer is prayed in silence and stillness, before an icon of Christ.

The Trisagion prayers are first said carefully and slowly. The Jesus Prayer is then repeated with attention and love.

A chotki, or prayer rope, may be used to keep count of the prayers.

When the prayer is being said in a group, the participants take turns according to the agreed practice.

After the Jesus Prayer, a short period of silence is kept before the dismissal prayers.

Those gathered then leave quietly.

Trisagion Prayers

Through the prayers of our holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us. Amen. 

O Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, you are everywhere present and fill all things. Treasury of blessings and giver of Life, come and abide in us, and cleanse us from every impurity and of thy goodness,  save our souls.

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Immortal: Have Mercy on Us.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and to the age of ages, Amen

O Holy Trinity have mercy upon us, Lord cleanse us from our sins, Master pardon our transgressions, O Holy One visit and heal our infirmities, For Your Holy Name’s sake.

Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: now and ever and to the age of ages, Amen.

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Your Name; Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one:

O Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us, Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me, a sinner.

Dismissal prayers

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this evening without sin. Blessed are You, O Lord, the God of our fathers, and praised and glorified is Your name forever. Amen.

Let Your mercy be upon us, O Lord, even as we have set our hope on You. Blessed art You, O Lord: teach me Your will. Blessed art You, O Master: make me to understand Your will. Blessed art You, O holy One: enlighten me by Your will. Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever, despise not the works of Your hands.

To You belongs worship, to You belongs praise, to You, belongs glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to ages of ages. Amen

Establish, O God, the holy Orthodox Faith of Orthodox Christians unto the ages of ages.

More honourable than the Cherubim; Infinitely more glorious than the Seraphim. Who spotlessly gave birth to the Word; We magnify you, we magnify you, truly Mother of God we magnify you!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
